Is your Dubai job offer actually good?
A Dubai package can hide the real value in its allowances. Enter the numbers from your offer and get an instant, colour-coded verdict — what's fair, what's worth a question, and what's quietly costing you money before you sign.

Which three changes to a UAE offer put the most money back in your pocket?
Raise the basic salary within the same total package, match the housing allowance to real rent in the area you will live in, and get school fees written in with a per-child cap. None of the three raises your employer’s monthly cost.
Raise the basic, not the total
Ask for a higher basic within the same package. Your monthly pay is identical but your gratuity grows every year you stay.
Match housing to your area
If the allowance is short of real rent where you want to live, that gap comes out of your pocket monthly. Negotiate it up or pick a cheaper area knowingly.
Get school fees in writing
For two children on the British curriculum, fees can top AED 130,000 a year. Employer-paid schooling is the single most valuable allowance for families.
What should a UAE offer letter contain?
A UAE offer letter should list basic salary, each allowance, notice, probation and end-of-service terms as separate lines. Only basic salary builds gratuity, and probation cannot exceed six months. Federal Decree-Law No. 33 of 2021.
A UAE offer is not one number. It is a stack of lines, and only one of them builds your end-of-service payout. Read in this order.
Basic salary. The only line that sets your gratuity. Everything below is an allowance and counts for nothing when you leave.
Housing allowance. Usually the largest allowance. Ask whether it is paid monthly with your salary or annually in advance, because Dubai landlords still expect rent in one or a small number of cheques. A monthly housing allowance and an annual rent demand is the single most common cash-flow shock a new arrival hits.
Transport allowance. Cash, or a car and fuel card. Cash is worth more than it looks if you were going to buy a cheap car anyway.
Education allowance. Ask two questions: is it capped per child or per family, and is it paid to you or direct to the school. A family cap on two children is a very different offer from a per-child cap.
Annual flights. Cash allowance or booked tickets, and for how many people. "Family" sometimes means the employee only.
Medical cover. Mandatory for the employee. Whether it extends to a spouse and children, and at what level, is negotiable and often is not offered until you ask.
Notice, probation and non-compete. Probation cannot exceed six months and cannot be extended. During probation your employer gives 14 days' written notice; if you are moving to another UAE employer you give at least one month, and 14 days if you are leaving the country. After probation, notice is set in the contract within the statutory range. Non-compete terms must be limited in time, place and type of work to be enforceable.

Why does the basic-salary split decide your gratuity?
Gratuity is calculated on basic pay alone. On AED 30,000 a month over three years a 30% basic pays AED 18,900 and a 60% basic pays AED 37,800 for identical monthly cash. Federal Decree-Law No. 33 of 2021, Article 51.
Two offers, both AED 30,000 a month. Identical cash in your account every month. Not identical at all when you leave.
Offer A sets basic at 30% — AED 9,000. Offer B sets basic at 60% — AED 18,000. Gratuity is 21 days of basic pay for each of your first five years. After three years, Offer A pays 63 days at AED 300 a day: AED 18,900. Offer B pays 63 days at AED 600 a day: AED 37,800. Same monthly money, double the exit payment.
Over five years the gap is AED 31,500 against AED 63,000. That is the whole argument for asking your employer to move money from allowances into basic before you sign, and it costs them nothing in monthly cash. Size yours in the take-home and gratuity calculator, or put your own basic salary and service dates into the UAE end-of-service gratuity calculator to see what the split is worth at your own length of service.
Both figures produced by this page’s own gratuity function and checked in Node on 27 August 2026. Gratuity accrues at 21 days’ basic pay per year for the first five years and 30 days per year after that, capped at two years’ wage, with a daily rate of monthly basic divided by 30. Federal Decree-Law No. 33 of 2021, Article 51.
What should a housing allowance cover against real area rent?
A housing allowance should cover the full annual rent for a two-bed where you will actually live. In Dubai Marina that is about AED 150,000 a year on the indicative 2026 area figures this calculator uses.
| Area | Rent, 2-bed (AED/yr) | Allowance needed (AED/mo) |
|---|---|---|
| Sharjah (commuter) | 55,000 | 4,583 |
| Jumeirah Village Circle | 85,000 | 7,083 |
| Jumeirah Lakes Towers | 110,000 | 9,167 |
| Abu Dhabi (city) | 120,000 | 10,000 |
| Business Bay | 130,000 | 10,833 |
| Dubai Marina | 150,000 | 12,500 |
| Dubai Hills | 160,000 | 13,333 |
| Downtown Dubai | 170,000 | 14,167 |
| Palm Jumeirah | 230,000 | 19,167 |
The score above asks two separate questions about housing, because they are two separate problems. First, does the allowance cover the rent where you have chosen to live? That is the allowance measured against the market, and it is the employer’s side of the deal. Second, can the rest of the package carry the rent the allowance does not reach? That is your side, and a large package absorbs a shortfall that a small one cannot.
If the rent you fund yourself passes 35% of the whole package, no arithmetic elsewhere in the offer rescues it, and the score is capped at 59 out of 100, which can never read green. That threshold sits just above the common guide that housing should sit near a third of gross pay. A second gate catches the other way this goes wrong: if the full market rent for the area is more than 55% of the package, allowance included, the score is capped on the same terms, because at that point the area is beyond what the package can carry however the lines are labelled.
Rents are indicative 2026 averages for a two-bed in each area, held in this page’s own area list. They are a sense-check, not a quotation for a specific building.
What should I ask for before signing a UAE job offer?
Ask for basic salary at no less than 50% of the package, housing matched to real area rent, and school fees capped per child in writing. The registered contract must match the offer. Federal Decree-Law No. 33 of 2021.
Does the offer match the contract that gets registered? The signed offer and the contract lodged with the authorities should say the same thing. If the registered basic is lower than the offer you accepted, your gratuity is calculated on the lower figure.
Is housing paid monthly or annually? Ask in writing. If it is monthly, budget for how you will fund the first year's rent cheque.
Are school fees per child or per family, and capped at what? Get the number, not the intention.
What happens to the visa if you resign? Your residence visa is tied to employment. Establish the grace period and who cancels what.
What is the notice period, both ways? A long notice period you owe and a short one they owe is a one-sided contract.
Is anything promised verbally? If it is not in the offer letter it does not exist. That applies to bonuses, fee increases, promotion timelines and flights.
How do you negotiate a UAE job offer?
Ask for three things before you sign: a higher basic salary inside the same total package, a housing allowance matched to real rent in your area, and school fees stated as a per-child cap. None of them raises your employer’s monthly cost.
1. Raise the basic, hold the total. "Could we set basic at 50% of the package rather than 40%, keeping the total unchanged? It makes no difference to your monthly cost and it matters to my end-of-service position."
2. Match housing to the area. If the allowance is short of real rent where you would actually live, say so with the number: "Two-bed rents in that area run around AED X a year. The allowance covers AED Y. Could we close the gap, or is a one-off relocation payment easier?"
3. Put school fees in writing with a per-child cap. "Could the offer state education support as up to AED X per child per year, for two children?"
Ask before you sign. After signing, every one of these becomes a favour rather than a term.
What are the red flags in a UAE job offer?
Six: no written offer, a basic salary below 40% of the package, housing left to be discussed, school fees promised only in conversation, a non-compete with no stated limits, and any request that you fund your own recruitment or permit costs.
No written offer. A verbal package is not a package.
Basic below 40%. Legal, common, and it quietly shrinks the money you walk away with.
"Housing to be discussed." The largest allowance should not be the vaguest line.
School fees promised in conversation. The most expensive verbal promise there is.
A non-compete with no limits. A restriction with no stated time, place or type of work is a warning about how the rest of the relationship will be run.
Any request that you fund your own recruitment or permit costs. Query it before you sign, and get the answer in writing. If in doubt, check the current position with MOHRE.

What should you do once the offer stacks up?
Three checks remain: whether you are better off than in the UK once rent, schools, a car and flights home are counted; what the UK tax side needs before you fly; and, if you are already in the UAE, where your gratuity stands.
Check the whole picture, not just the package: will you actually be better off than in the UK after rent, schools, the car and flights home? Then sort the UK side before you fly — the P85, split-year treatment and your National Insurance record. If you are already here, run the on-the-ground money health-check.
